چکیده
The intense, bursting X-ray source in the globular cluster NGC1851 was one of the first cluster sources discovered, but has remained optically unidentified for 25 years. We report here on results from Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 multicolor images in NGC1851. Our high spatial resolution images resolve ∼200 objects in the 3 radius Einstein X-ray error circle, 40 times as many as in previous ground-based work. A color-magnitude diagram of the cluster clearly reveals a markedly UV-excess object with B∼21, (U−B) ∼ −0.9 only 2 from the X-ray position. The UV-excess candidate is 0 . 12 distant from a second, unremarkable star that is 0.5 mag brighter in B; thus ground-based studies of this field are probably impractical. Three other UV-excess objects are also present among the ∼16,000 objects in the surveyed region of the cluster, leaving a ∼5% probability that a UV-excess object has fallen in the X-ray error circle by chance. No variability of the candidate is seen in these data, although a more complete study is required. If this object is in fact the counterpart of the X-ray source, previous inferences that some globular cluster X-ray sources are optically subluminous with respect to low-mass X-ray binaries in the field are now strengthened. We report the optical identifications of two X-ray luminous point sources in the spiral galaxy NGC 4565 based on archive data of Chandra and the Hubble Space Telescope. The central X-ray point source, RXJ1236.3+2559, is found to be the nucleus of NGC 4565 with an X-ray luminosity of L x ≈ 4.3 × 10 39 erg s −1. We show that its multi-waveband properties are consistent with it being a low-luminos...

We examine images of the field of X1832–330, the luminous (LX ∼ 10 36 erg s) X-ray burst source near the center of the globular cluster NGC6652, in order to identify the optical counterpart for further study. U and B ground-based images allow us to set a limit MB0 > ∼3.5 for the counterpart at the time of those observations, provided that the color is (U − B)0 ∼ −1, similar to the sources known...

Optical spectra of SN1994W in NGC 4041 revealed the presence of a dense (Ne >10 8 cm circumstellar shell. An observation with the ROSAT HRI detected a source, with a luminosity of ∼8×10 ergs s, coincident with the position of SN1994W to within 1.4. The positional coincidence plus the optical evidence for a dense circumstellar shell support the identification of the X-ray source as SN1994W. Subj...

We have detected three new x-ray point sources, in addition to the known low-mass x-ray binary (LMXB) X1832-330, in the globular cluster NGC 6652 with a Chandra 1.6 ksec HRC-I exposure. Star 49 (M V ∼4.7), suggested by Deutsch et al.(1998) as the optical candidate for the LMXB, is identified (< 0.3 ′′) not with the LMXB, but with another, newly detected source (B). Using archival HST images, we...

In this paper we report that a bright, X-ray source in the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/9), previously identified as an ultra-luminous X-ray source, is in fact a background quasar. We identify an isolated infrared and optical counterpart within 0.3 ± 0. ′′ 5 the X-ray source X-37. After acquiring an optical spectrum of its counterpart, we use the narrow [OIII] and broad Hα emission lines to iden...
